Union Customs Code
New customs rules come into force on 1st May 2016 making life simpler for European businesses and providing better protection to consumers. The new Union Customs Code (UCC) represents a major overhaul of existing EU customs legislation, which dates back to 1992.
It is a milestone for the European Customs Union, the framework which allows more than €3 trillion worth of goods to flow in and out of the EU each year and also generates a significant portion of the EU’s budget. The new rules allow traders to clear customs procedures more simply and quickly, getting goods to consumers faster. They also enhance the protection of consumers against dangerous goods or products that don’t respect European environmental, health and safety requirements.
Cooperation of national customs administrations are improved as well with the help of new IT systems. The UCC will complete the shift to a paperless and fully electronic customs environment.
